Background:We sought to assess the effect of Orlistat (Alli) use on weight, fat and cholesterol levels in healthy obese adults.
Methods:Participants were identified via electronic health records and were assessed for the use of orlistat (orlistat) and/or lipase inhibitor (liraglutide). Participants were assessed in the same way as in the case of orlistat use in the case of lipase inhibitor use. The study was conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice. The study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York (HREC-0247).
Results:There were no differences between participants taking orlistat and those taking orlistat, but participants taking liraglutide had greater reductions in BMI and waist circumference than those not taking orlistat. There was no significant difference in serum lipids or waist circumference between participants taking orlistat and those taking liraglutide, but significantly more individuals taking liraglutide had greater reductions in total cholesterol levels.
Conclusion:The use of orlistat and/or liraglutide is associated with higher reductions in BMI, waist circumference, and cholesterol, with greater reductions in total cholesterol and less reductions in triglycerides. Orlistat use can lead to modest weight loss and an increase in cardiovascular risk. The use of liraglutide, despite the potential benefit of weight loss, was not associated with these reductions.

The greatest increases in cholesterol levels were observed in the orlistat group, but these increases were more significant in the liraglutide group, and their magnitude of effect was greater than those seen in the liraglutide group. Although these reductions were not statistically significant, the magnitude of the effect of Orlistat on fat distribution was greater in the orlistat group. These findings are consistent with previous research that found that orlistat may be effective in preventing fat-related complications, such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Orlistat was also associated with increased body weight, and a higher percentage of participants taking orlistat were obese.
Cases:We observed that the use of Orlistat led to a reduction in the number of participants who reported being overweight or obese, as well as an increase in total body fat in participants with obesity. These findings are consistent with previous research that found that orlistat has anti-obesity effects in subjects with obesity. The authors also found that the use of orlistat did not produce an increase in body weight or waist circumference in participants with obesity, suggesting that the use of orlistat may have potential to reduce body weight. We do not know whether orlistat would be beneficial in preventing weight gain or weight loss in the presence of obesity. These findings are consistent with the findings of many other studies.
